About

Our Background

Sample Meadow Publishing came about as a result of a life long love of reading.  Growing up in the 50’s and 60’s we did not have a TV.  When we were still quite young and the old TV on the roll-around cart started to go my folks decided not to replace it.  Instead, they encouraged us to read, play outdoors and be active.  It was an incredible life lesson and gift!

Our family vacations were simple – we camped.  Most years we camped for two weeks at a time in the High Sierra’s.  What a glorious time!  My Dad taught us directions and trail safety, how to make shelters and how to find help in the event we got turned around or lost.  Today a parent would never let their child explore like we were allowed to do.  Somewhere around ages 6-8 we would get up and have breakfast, do a few camp chores and then be told to be back in time for lunch when the sun was straight above us.  After lunch we might have a family outing or more free time and then back in time for dinner.  My brothers and I usually explored together because it was more fun to share.  But occasionally we would sneak off for some quiet time.  While we were out exploring my mother would pull her lawn chair out into an open area, usually near some rocks or logs and read.  For two glorious weeks she would read, uninterrupted.  Well, I should say read and feed the chipmunks.  It usuallly only took a day or two for the squirrels to figure out she had saved some sort of treat for them and they would perch on the rocks or logs and vie for her attention.

My Dad found a remote campground in the Kaiser Wilderness, called Sample Meadow Campground.  Trout fishing was everything we wanted it to be.  Us kids were in exploration heaven.  Mom had her suitcase full of books and life was good!   And now you know the back story to how Sample Meadow Publishing came about!

Note: at the time this page was written Sample Meadow Campground and many of the sites and trails in the Kaiser Wilderness are closed due to the 2020 fires that devastated the area.
